"From Artist to Transartist"

A presentation and panel discussion with guest artists Nathalie Anguezomo Mba Bikoro, Anna Faroqhi, and Susanne Martin organized and moderated by Jean Marie Casbarian

Join us for a gathering of conversation with invited guest artists and resident faculty as we discuss the ways in which these professional artists have navigated the art world to create a sustainable practice, career and creative life.  Coming from our personal stories and perspectives, we will attempt to break down the myth of the road map as it relates to the concept of success and dive into the deeper question of what it means to be an artist in an ever-evolving 21st Century.  We will address the choices that we have made along the way while maintaining a continued commitment to building an art practice. Finding and/or developing a creative community with ongoing dialogue, seeking out artist residencies to attend, academic teaching, or engaging oneself in community-based platforms and activism have all been vehicles in the shaping of these uniquely rich lives.  We'll conclude with an open forum for question and answers and further dialogue.

Guest Artists 


Anguezomo Mba Bikoro's interdisciplinary practices incorporate a synthesis of collaborative engagements, the development of international community dialogue and body politics through a merging of conceptual responses in live art performance, film, literature & archives. Her practices derive from developing a creative language through cancer physio-therapies in her personal battle with Leukaemia cancer throughout the 90's.

Her critical process is informed by discourses of histories, archives and theories on postcolonialism, diaspora, migration, identities, afro & alter modernism and culture. Her work reveals and creates moments of synthesis and harmony between seemingly disparate, bodies of knowledge, cultural traditions and value systems. An exploration of creolised identity, heritage, memory and homeland, the artist investigates systems of colonial past & present, tyranny, dictates of gender, traditions and mythologies. She engages with communities contesting handcrafted economies of art, politics, literature, ecologies and philosophy combining alternative strategies in performance and practice to deconstruct social narratives and work on processes and engagement rather than final products that answer to political anecdotes of the way we live with "Archipelagoes for Drexyian Mermaids", "How To Turn A Mountain Into Pearls", "How To Dance With Goats", "LightHouse for Lost Songs", "Cinema For Fauna", "Future Monuments" and "Building Landing Spaces for Ancestors".  

With her approach both educative and allegorical, Anguezomo Mba Bikoro highlights the different tones of a society shared between delusions and ritual. 

She is Associate Lecturer in Philosophy and Arts History and Curator of Performance Programmes at Savvy Contemporary Gallery in Berlin. She is director of Squat Museum in Gabon and Artistic Director of Squat Monument. Her contributions have included Dak'art Biennale Senegal (2012); Smithsonian Museum of African Art Washington DC (2013); Tiwani Contemporary London (2012); Kalao Pan African Galleries Bilbao (2014); 798 Art District Gallery Beijing (2015); Museum of African Art Johannesburg (2011); Michael Stevenson Gallery Cape Town (2011); Tate Britain London (2009); Pitts Rivers Oxford Museum UK (2014); Bedfordbury Gallery London (2010); South London Gallery (2010); and Art15 Fair London (2015).

She is the recipient of several  awards including BBK Artists Award (2017), British Arts Council (2016), Senats Abteilung Kulturelle Angelegenheiten (2016), Goethe Institut South Africa (2016), Fondation Blachère and Afrique Soleil Mali for Best Artist awarded at the 10th Dakar Biennale (2012), Best Discovery Award at New York Cutlog (2013), Ercillas Prize for Best Exhibition Award at FIG Bilbao (2014), HANGAR Research Fellowship Lisbon/Angola (2016-219). She was recently speaker in the TAZ.Lab Open Conferences at Haus Der Kulturen Der Welt presenting Decolonial Cities. She is also part of the Goethe Institute’s programme Episodes of the South in São Paulo.   



In her films, illustrations, and educational/curatorial work, Anna Faroqhi deals with themes such as biography, architecture, and history. Her work examines social issues and critically deals with the way images are produced and received, as well as how stories are told. In her work a dialogue is established between photographic and drawn images as a means of fictional narrative.

Anna Faroqhi is a Berlin-based filmmaker and illustrator. She trained as a classical singer, as well as in mathematics, physics, and film. Faroqhi’s body of work includes films, texts, illustrations, and educational works, and has been presented internationally in museums and art events.

Faroqhi teaches video for opera directors and singers at the Hans Eisler School of Music in Berlin. She has given film seminars at the Beit Berl Film School, Israel; St. Joseph University, Beirut; Cornell University, New York, Transart Institute, Berlin; and was an advisor at the Filmuniversität Potsdam. In 2009 she was a recipient of the Villa Aurora work stipend in Los Angeles.

Together with her husband and collaborator Haim Peretz, Faroqhi gives workshops in film and illustration for children and adults at various public schools, museums and institutions. The results of these workshops have been presented in public shows curated by the artist duo at museums, galleries, or movie theaters.

Faroqhi sees her educational work—especially if participants come from underprivileged and/or migration backgrounds—as an empowerment for participants to voice their own stories.

Anna Faroqhi’s work has been shown in Berlin at the Hamburger Bahnhof, Saalbau Neukölln, Akademie der Künste, Martin-Gropius-Bau, and at the Manifesta, Italy, New York Film Archives, Goethe Institute, Tel Aviv, etc.

She is currently working on a graphic novel, and—in collaboration with Haim Peretz—on a documentary on an educational architectural exchange project dealing with the ideas of the Bauhaus.



Susanne Martin is a Berlin based choreographer, performer, researcher, and teacher in the field of contemporary dance and theatre. She presents her work internationally in solo performances and collaborative stage works. Her artistic practice and research focuses on improvisation, contact improvisation, narrations of the aging body, humour and irony in dance, and performance as research. Her book Dancing Age(ing): Rethinking Age(ing) In and Through Improvisation Practice and Performance will be published by transcript in January 2017.


She studied at Rotterdam Dance Academy, Folkwang University Essen, Inter-University Centre for Dance Berlin, and Middlesex University London, which earned her a BA, MA, and a PhD. She keeps studying with her colleagues, friends, students... and plans to continue and continue and continue...
