Laura Bissell

laura-bissellDr. Laura Bissell is a Lecturer in Contemporary Performance Practice within the School of Drama at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. Laura studied English Literature and Theatre Studies at the University of Glasgow and at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia and has presented her research on contemporary performance practices at conferences nationally and internationally. Laura’s research interests include: contemporary performance practices and methodologies; technology and performance; live art; body art; feminist performance, performance and site and film and video in performance. Laura has recently embarked on a new research project exploring performance and journeys as part of her involvement in the Making Routes network. Laura travels to work by boat and has been considering commuting as a performative practice as part of a collaborative research project. As well as teaching on the BAHons Contemporary Performance Practice course Laura currently supervises students on the MRes in Creative Practices at Glasgow School of Art and is a visiting lecturer on this programme. Laura is a member of the Creative Learning Board (a collaboration between The RCS, GSA, The University of Glasgow and the Arches) and is also on the board of A Moment’s Peace Theatre Company. Laura has previously supervised research projects on the MLitt in Playwriting and Dramaturgy at the University of Glasgow and is currently supervising a PhD project at the RCS. In 2013 Laura had an article entitled  “Deviant Practices: Technological Re-codings of the City through Radical Play” published in the Body, Space, Technology e-journal and her research on “The Female Cyborg as Grotesque in Performance” featured in the International Journal of Performance Arts and Digital Media in September 2013. Laura’s previous publications include an article on Stewart Laing’s piece The Salon Project for the Contemporary Theatre Review (Volume 22 issue 1 March 2012) and “Amorphous Bodies: The Uncanny in Performance” in Body Space Technology (Volume 9 Number 2 September 2010).
