O’Neill Cushman is an artist originally from Washington D.C. and is currently working and living in Aix-en-Provence, France. There, he is an apprentice and resident fellow at the Marchutz School of Art.  Working primarily in oil paints on canvas, O’Neill explores the visible world with quick, spontaneous paintings, done mostly en-plein-air.  Central to his work is the idea that his subject matter is secondary to the visual or sensory experience of a work, and that his content is necessarily bound up in the form it takes, rather than born out of the subject matter of the works he paints.
